Hertfordshire Constabulary has announced it will be supporting an alcohol action week, following the launch of a new telephone counselling service.

Led by the Association of Chief Police Officers, the week of action will see officers across Hertfordshire raising awareness of alcohol-related issues.

Safer Neighbourhood Teams will work with council licensing departments, while trading standards officers visit licensed premises and run test purchase operations.

The week of action, which will continue until September 28, follows the launch of a new telephone alcohol counselling service in Hertfordshire.

Detective Superintendent Mick Hanlon, from the county community safety unit, said: “We welcome this fortnight of raising awareness of the dangers of alcohol.

"Dealing with the consequences of irresponsible drinking in town centres on Friday and Saturday night is a significant drain on police resources.”

The telephone counselling service, which launched on September 1, will provide an alternative for those requiring further support to stop drinking or prevent relapse.

The service is available seven days a week via 0300 111 2470, with a message service for a call back if a counsellor is not available.
