Boris Johnson has confirmed which seat he will target during the next election - and it won’t be Hertsmere.

The London Mayor’s spokesman has announced that Mr Johnson is applying to be a candidate in the Conservative safe seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip, in West London.

The incumbent MP John Randall received a majority of 11,000 at the 2010 general election, but is stepping down after 17 years.

The party's candidate for the seat will be announced on September 12.

Rumours that the Mayor could stand in Hertsmere began circulating after long-serving MP James Clappison announced his decision to resign last month after almost 23 years' service.

Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, Morris Bright, previously said he would also consider putting himself forward for the role.

The Conservative representative for Elstree, Councillor Bright, said: "I have lived in Hertsmere for 25 years. I have been on the council for 15 years and leader of the council for seven.

"I love Hertsmere and I have been delighted to work so closely with so many people to make our area one to be proud of.

"If it is felt, further down the line that I should put my name down then I would deeply consider it because I love Hertsmere and I love my party."
