Children were inspired to take up boxing when a champion visited their school this morning.

Sean Murphy, a Commonwealth gold medallist, and his daughter, Lucy Murphy, who is training for Rio 2016, showed off their talents at Kenilworth Primary School.

The nine to 11-year-olds afterwards said they were fascinated by the sport and were hoping to join Boxcleva, a non-contact boxing club for kids.

Isabelly Petzen, 11, said: “I practiced some boxing with Lucy to see if I was good and I do not think it is that hard.

“I really want to join the boxing club now because I think I could be really good at it, it is a really fun sport and I am excited to get involved.”

The duo were asked to come to the Kenilworth Drive school by Borehamwood firefighter Bob Williams, who started Boxcleva to help promote a healthy lifestyle in children.

The club, open to children aged eight to 15, also helps youngsters control their aggression in a safe environment.

Samantha Jayasuriua, headteacher of the school, said: “It is a really exciting club that the children can get involved in. It helps keep them active whilst staying safe so it is great.

“Who knows, maybe we have a budding Olympic gold medallist amongst the students here who could win a gold in boxing.”

Boxcleva is supported by Herts Fire and Rescue Service, Tesco, Affinity Sutton and Hertsmere Borough Council.

Mr Murphy said: “It is about fun and teaching the children how to look after themselves – it is a great initiative and I fully support it.”
