An accident at Stirling Corner this morning “could have been avoided” if the area was controlled by traffic lights, campaigners claim.

The accident between a bus and a car on the roundabout that separates Barnet and Borehamwood was minor, and paramedics were not required to attend.

Tireless campaigners have spent years trying to petition Transport for London (TfL), who own the roundabout, to install round the clock traffic signals.

Last week, GLA member for Barnet Andrew Dismore launched a survey into the area in a bid to make it safer once and for all.

He said: “A lot of these small crashes are not properly recorded in the statistics which is where part of the problem lies.

“We need to do something about this junction once and for all. This crash may have been less likely to happen if we had the signals”.

Steven Davies, a driving instructor at 001 Driving School in Elstree, said this is proof 24-hour traffic signals are needed.

The 55-year-old said: “It is a really dangerous death trap. The traffic there is far too quick. Traffic lights could certainly help – the accident this morning shows that.”

Sue Alford, of Hunter Close, Borehamwood, said: “Luckily this morning’s accident was only minor but maybe it could have been avoided if the lights had been on.

“Next time, it could be serious and that is obviously very worrying. People need to sign the survey to stop this happening again”.

The Borehamwood Times is awaiting comment from TfL.
