Smokers can take part in the first ever mass attempt to kick the habit in Hertsmere.

Hertsmere Borough Council is starting a stop smoking campaign launched by the Department of Health on Monday, October 1.

The Stoptober campaign involves a free 28-day programme to help people quit.

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of premature death in Hertfordshire.

Councillor Brenda Batten said: “What a lot of people may not know is that if you kick the habit for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke free longer-term.

“And it doesn’t take long to feel the benefits. After just 28 days of not lighting up, smokers say they have a better sense of smell and taste, have more energy, and they save money because they are not paying for cigarettes.

“We want as many people as possible in the borough who are struggling to quit to sign up to this campaign."
