A boy who spent Christmas day sedated in hospital is gearing up to meet Chelsea player Frank Lampard this weekend.

George Gillings, of Barton Way, Borehamwood, developed septicaemia after an operation to treat his Crohn’s disease last year.

His mother, Mandy Miller, was left feeling “heartbroken” when the 12-year-old was transferred to Great Ormond Street hospital from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital a few weeks before Christmas day.

She said: “It was horrendous. We completely forgot it was Christmas and put all our energy on caring for George.

“He is such a fighter though and he woke up on New Year’s Eve, I am thrilled to bits he was able to overcome it.

“He has been through so much and is really looking forward to meeting the Chelsea team this weekend, and I am so excited for him.

“He has supported them for so long.”

The Chelsea football team visit the children’s ward at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital every Christmas, so the keen footballer was devastated when he moved hospitals and missed it.

But now George, who received a Blue Peter Badge for his outstanding bravery, is counting down the days he will meet Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

His trip was organised by charity Rays of Sunshine, who grant wishes to children with life limiting illnesses.

The Cowley Hill School pupil said: “I get to go and see Chelsea v Newcastle and then they are taking me in the tunnels just before full time.

“I have been marking the days off on my calendar for around three weeks now. It is hard to know what to say to Frank when I meet him – I am going to be so star struck.

“I think it is going to be one of the most exciting days ever.”
