A couple are turning their historic home into a garden party next week in aid of a children’s charity.

Norman and Anne Shuker, of High Street, Elstree, first moved into the Grade 2 listed building, Shopwick Place, in 1999.

Mr Shuker says the garden was in a “complete state of disrepair” so the couple were inspired to revamp it and open it up to the public for a good cause.

For the last eight years, their garden parties have raised thousands of pounds for children's charity NSPCC.

66-year-old Mr Shuker said: “You could barely see anything in the garden, it was just in such a disastrous state because everything was so overgrown.

“We planted roses and other types of flowers, and put so much time getting it back from the dead. It looks so beautiful now.”

They chose to support the NSPCC because the previous owner of the house, Dr Wynn Everett, was a keen supporter of the charity.

The house dates back to the 1700s was listed in the 50s, and also features a woodland path and a pet cemetery.

The usually peaceful garden, which spawns over eight and a half acres, will be transformed with a band, stalls, a marquee and a raffle stand.

The businessman added: “We are really excited about holding our fundraising day and opening our garden up to the public. We hope to raise at least £1,000 for NSPCC.

“We’ve put so much effort into it but we couldn’t have done it without the help of our volunteers. The only thing left to do now is hope the weather holds up.”

The event will be held at Shopwick Place, High Street, Elstree on July 22 from 2pm until 5pm and all are welcome to attend. St Nicholas Church, next door to the house, will also be open for visitors.
