A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal crash on the M25 last night.

A woman in her 80s, who was a passenger in a green Astra, died in the collision just before 11pm last night, on the M25 clockwise between junction 22 for London Colney and junction 23 for the A1.

A white lorry crashed into the back of the Astra, which then crashed into a red lorry in front. The incident closed the carriageway for five hours.

A man believed to be in his 40s, who was driving the car, was taken to Barnet General Hospital where he remains for treatment.

PC Martin Longley of the road crash investigation team said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who sadly died following this collision.

“I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who was travelling along the road and saw the vehicles involved either before, during or after the collision to please get in contact.”

A 27-year-old man from Kettering has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was released on bail, due to return to Hatfield Police Station on October 19.
