Rotarians present charity cheque to Paralympian
A paralympian who lost his legs while serving in Afghanistan received a charity donation from Rotarians last week.
Derek Derenalagi, who lost both his legs in Helmand Province in 2007, has taken up the javelin and shot put and will compete for Team GB at this summer's Paralympics in London.
On Friday, June 29, Mr Derenalagi was presented with a cheque for £10,500 from the Rotary Club of Elstree and Borehamwood, which will be donated to Help For Heroes.
Rotarian Barbara Kennedy, said: “Derek is so inspirational and he is such an excellent ambassador for Help for Heroes. The club has been delighted to support this wonderful charity.”
The former rugby player, who lives in Bushey and won a gold medal at the European championships last week, was also presented with a cheque of £1,000 to help with his training for the games.
The former soldier, who is an ambassador for Help for Heroes, appeared as guest of honour at a charity golf day organised by the Rotary club last year.
