A new college specialising in training young people for the film and television industry has been given backing by the Government.

The planned Elstree University Technical College (UTC), which will be based in Borehamwood, will open in the next two years.

Elstree UTC will focus on teaching students aged 14 to 19 skills in electronic engineering and digital technologies, as well as entertainment technologies and crafts.

The main backer of the college is David Meller, who also sponsored The Bushey Academy and Harefield Academy.

The college will receiving money from some of the biggest names in the entertainment world, including Warner Brothers and Sony Entertainment.

As previously reported, it is hoped the 600 students who attend the college will benefit from its close proximity to Elstree Studios.

It has also been announced 14 other UTCs around the country have received backing from the Government, which will take the total for the entire country up to 34.
