THE vicar of St Michael’s Church, in Brook Road, has completed a cycling challenge to raise £800 toward a new cross.

Reverend Richard Leslie, 64, completed a sponsored bike ride to Baldock on Sunday, October 2.

Accompanied by friend and fellow Rotarian, David Rose, the pair pedalled the 35miles from Borehamwood in three and a half hours.

The Anglican vicar said: “The weather was very warm, but otherwise perfect conditions for cycling. And we didn’t get any punctures either.”

The cyclists raised £800 in sponsorship for the St Michael’s Church Tower Cross Appeal, which aims to replace the rotting wooden cross on top of the tower.

Rev’d Leslie, who has been with the church for 14 years, said half of the £6000 needed has now been raised.

The church roof, which has had the same cross since it was built in 1956, also requires repairs to stop water leaks.

It is hoped work will begin in the New Year.
