A BOREHAMWOOD biker has been recognised for his pristine 1950s motorbike by a local club named after a “legendary” cafe on the A41 near Watford.

The Busy Bee Motorcycle Club gave their annual trophy to Robin Slinger for his original 1953 Royal Enfield 350cc.

Once a year members of the club, who meet every Thursday in London Colney, roll up at the former site of the Busy Bee Cafe on the A41, now where the Hilton Hotel stands.

The cafe was a regular haunt for bikers in the 1950s and 60s, who were often challenged to race up to the Elstree roundabout and back before a record ended on the jukebox.

Apparently, due to the number of people who came off their bikes the junction was nicknamed ‘suicide corner’.

Sadly for the motorbike enthusiasts the cafe closed in 1968, but the club, which formed in 1994, continues to honour the famous meeting place with a ceremony each year.

The bikers, some of whom are in their 80s, meet annually on the first Sunday in September at the Hilton hotel and dig into the lawn to reveal the tiled floor of the cafe.

After refreshments and swapping stories, the Busy Bee Trophy is handed to the member with the most well maintained classic bike.

The club, which has more than 100 members, meets every Thursday night at Broadlakes Lodge Social Club in Shenley Lane, London Colney.
