YOUNGSTERS are invited to write a letter to the Queen as part of centenary celebrations marking the world’s first Air Mail flight.

On September 9 1911, Gustav Hamel flew a Bleriot aircraft carrying mail from the London Aerodrome in Hendon, to Windsor to celebrate the Coronation of King George V.

As well as official letters to reigning monarchs, emperors and world leaders, the aircraft also carried correspondence from the general public.

To mark the anniversary, a helicopter will set off from the Royal Air Force museum in Grahame Park Way, Colindale at 11am on September 9.

Flying over the original 1911 route to Windsor Great Park, it will carry a variety of mail including any messages from Barnet’s young people who are encouraged to write a brief message to the Queen, telling her what they like about growing up in 2011.

Letters should be brought to the museum where a special post box has been set up.
