FORTY per cent of Hertsmere residents went to the polls yesterday to have their say on voting reform.

The turnout for the referendum on introducing the Alternative Vote (AV) for General Elections in the borough has just been revealed.

More than 22,000 residents turned up yesterday to cast their vote, while more than 6,000 more had already submitted their vote by post.

The results of the referendum, which was held across the UK yesterday, have not yet been announced. Ballot papers are due to be counted from 4pm this evening.

However, the Yes campaign are bracing themselves for a defeat, especially in light of yesterday's damaging losses for the Lib Dems, who had championed a move to AV.
