Metro Bank to open new branch in Borehamwood Shopping Park next year

A NEW bank opening in Borehamwood Shopping Park is set to bring jobs to the area.

Metro Bank will open in the Shopping Park in Theobald Street next year in the building previously occupied by JJB Sports.

It is focusing on opening branches in the Greater London area, with a target to launch 200 branches within 10 years.

Planning permission for the bank was given in May last year by Hertsmere Borough Council's planning committee.

Pegasus Planning Group devised the planning proposals on behalf of Metro Bank and asked for the premises to be changed from an A1 (retail) to an A2 (bank) use.

The bank is currently in the process of finalizing its application for a bank license from the Financial Services Authority, which was submitted in September 2008.

It is set to open longer hours from 7am to 10pm from Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm for Sunday and bank holidays.

The council said in the application: “The council raises no objection to the principle of the development as there will be no adverse affects on the street scene or cause any detrimental impacts on the vitality and viability of the town centre.

“The development hereby permitted shall be begun before the expiration of 3 years from the date of this permission.”

A spokesman for Metro Bank said: “There is no date confirmed when the bank will actually open in Borehamwood.

“Our stores in Holborn and South Kensington are the ones that have been completed and at present we are also waiting for our FSA license, which is very near completion.

“The bank will be hiring staff but I can’t comment at present on how many people will be employed.”
