A woman suffering from cerebral palsy scooped a community award at the Oaklands College Adult Learners Awards last week.
Rhian Bond-Vaughan, 26, from Greenside, Borehamwood was nominated for the award after showing an outstanding commitment to learning and a determination to succeed, against all odds.
Miss Bond-Vaughan got involved with the Adult Learners scheme after contacting the Hertsmere Learning Forum. She was keen to begin working with children so in September last year she began a Learn to Work course at Oaklands College in Elstree Way.
As part of the course she began a work placement at Borehamwood's community playgroup.
She now works confidently at the playgroup for two mornings a week and is on her way to becoming a full time staff member.
Helen Parr, Oaklands College Principle, said: "Rhian is an excellent example of a student who has enriched her life through adult learning and has overcome adversity to achieve her goals."
