Blood donating session to be held in Borehamwood on Sunday

A SYNAGOGUE in Borehamwood has teamed up with the National Blood Service (NBS) to hold a blood donating session on Sunday.

Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue will host the event on behalf of the Joely Bear Appeal at Yavneh College, in Hillside Avenue, Borehamwood.

The Joely Bear Appeal was founded in 1994 by Leigh and Lisa Renak in memory of their son Joel. He died at the age of four after battling a rare form of liver cancer.

Since its inception, the charity has worked to provide facilities to make stays in hospitals more comfortable for young cancer patients and their families. It also provides grants for research into the treatment and detection of cancer in children.

The Borehamwood session is running between 10am and 4pm on Sunday and donors are being offered the opportunity to promote the blood drive or become an ambassador for the NBS.

Judy Woolf, vice chairman of Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue, in Croxdale Road, said: “The Borehamwood and Elstree community consistently and wholeheartedly supports the United Synagogue’s Give Blood campaign and the Joely Bear Appeal, which was formed following the tragic loss of one of the community’s young children.

“We urge our members to support the session at Yavneh College and if you have never given blood before please consider that just one hour of your day on July 12 could save a life.”

Project Chesed, run by the synagogue and the London School of Jewish Studies, is specifically encouraging Jewish members of the community to give blood.

Candice Woolfson, director of Project Chesed, said: “Giving blood costs you nothing and each donation is potentially saving a life. We hope many more will support us and come along and donate at Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue, helping us to achieve our goal of significantly increasing the number of blood donors from the Jewish community.”
