Invisible man actress back on set in Shenley after 50 years

INVISIBLE Man star Deborah Watling had a surprise visit to a house she filmed at on a tour of the area.

The actress was a special guest on the film and television tour organised by Borehamwood resident Robert Hickey.

Ms Watling filmed the show during the late Fifties in Borehamwood and surrounding areas and Mr Hickey took her to an old location at Manor House, in Shenley.

He said: “The whole day was brilliant and it was a pleasure to have Deborah there for the tour.

“We only planned to spend half an hour at the house, but ended up spending an hour. She was really happy to go back there and see the other locations around Borehamwood and Elstree.

“She was a wonderful guest and we presented her with flowers and champagne, which she was really pleased about.”

Ms Watling also received a framed certificate to mark the 50th anniversary of the show.

Members of the tour included people on a separate annual tour for television programme On the Buses.

Films for the popular show were made in Borehamwood in the Seventies.

Steve Holden, from the On the Buses fan club, said: “It was an excellent day we had on the Saturday where we toured the area and were also able to use Elstree Studios as a base for lunch so thank you to the people there.

“As it was the 40th anniversary of On the Buses it was more of an occasion for us. We had to limit the people to 100 as we needed to fit them all in the old red Routemaster bus. A huge thanks has to go to Dean of Sullivan Buses who provided us with the bus that so many enjoyed riding on and who also created and printed the location guides.

“I also thank Paul Welsh for joining us on the day and Bob Redman [from Elstree Screen Heritage].

“Both were involved when the idea first came about for holding the event and I was delighted to meet up with them again. Of course thank you to the actors and producers who attended the day also.

“We are getting great feedback from the people who visited.

“There were some very good locations and Robert Hickey was wonderful because he has a wealth of knowledge on this subject.”

Mr Hickey added: “People are already talking about doing more tours. The area has so much history, so it is important to keep it alive in people’s minds.”
