Theatre arts school launches summer school workshops

A WEST End performer who has created a new theatre arts school for children will be hosting the group's first summer school workshops next month.

Lauren Cattell, 28, from Borehamwood, opened the Lila Vincent Theatre Arts School in April, offering classes for children over the age of three. This includes dance classes in tap, ballet and jazz, drama workshops and musical theatre.

She runs the classes at St Michael & All Angels Church, in Brook Road, Borehamwood, and hopes to start further classes in Radlett.

Ms Cattell started training at the age of four at the Lila Vincent School of Dance, in Borehamwood, and won a place at the Italia Conti Academy in London at the age of 17.

She has appeared in productions of Grease, Dirty Dancing, the Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas, and starred in pantomimes, including Dick Whittington.

She said: “Our first term has gone brilliantly as the children are having fun, making new friends and definitely growing in confidence.

“The progression they have made in just one term is fantastic."

A new feature Ms Cattell has introduced is the Melody Movement early learning classes for children aged from 18 months to three years old.

Ms Cattell added: “This is a lovely syllabus designed specifically for pre-school children to learn along with Melody Bear.

“It was created by a lady in Cambridge and it lets the children interact with the bear to provide a focus for them to learn aspects of dance.

"They absolutely love it and it makes learning fun for them."

As a dance student, Ms Cattell helped her dance teacher Diane Parks with classes, which were held at Fairway Hall, in Borehamwood.

She added: “I would like to congratulate two past students of mine, Lauren Murphy, 17, and Jake Gooch, 16, both from Borehamwood.

“The have auditioned and successfully won places at top London Theatre Schools – Millennium Performing Arts and Laine Theatre Arts. I’m so proud of them both and wish them every success."

The summer school workshops will be held on August 12, 13 and 14, with the sessions being open to non-school members also.

The workshops will include a masterclass session with an actress from the West End musical Mary Poppins.

The workshops will include a half-day session for three to five-year-olds and a full-day session for six-year-olds and over.

The school’s autumn term will begin on September 14.
