Art project for Radlett park

ARTISTS will create a new outdoor sculpture at a park in Radlett with money provided by the Big Lottery Fund.

The structure will provide shelter and seating at Phillimore Recreation Ground, in Gills Hill Lane, following a successful bid by Hertsmere Borough Council in 2007.

Design consultancy company Superblue is working with Green Heart Partnership, council officers and Hertfordshire Constabulary to develop the structure.

Green Heart Partnership is made up of Arts Council England, East, and the ten authorities of Hertfordshire. It aims to achieve a relationship between the arts and environment.

Ed Sandham, the borough council's sports and cultural services manager, said: "We have appointed Green Heart Partnership to work on the design and build the structures.

"The artists will be talking to people of all ages including those who use the parks, sports groups, residents, schools and community groups.

"We are also planning to hold a number of exciting creative events and workshops at the site over the summer."

Artists from Superblue, Annick Collins and Robert Frith, will be talking to people about their vision for the structures to finalise designs. They are also creating structures for parks in Potters Bar and Bushey.

Ms Collins said: “We are excited to be involved with three unique places and their communities to create innovative structures that play with the space as well as compliment and enhance the surrounding environment of each site.

"We hope each shelter evolves to have a life of its own through being used and loved by its future owners, the community. We are looking forward to working with the team and the community during the build up."

The new shelter is expected to be installed by January next year.

Isn't this the recreation ground mentioned in the police community leaflets in Radlett shop windows where there are issues with anti-social behaviour and alcohol consumption by youths? Either the art will be defaced or people will be too scared to go there.

I am surprised that the Big Lottery Fund found this more suitable for funding than a bid from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. This charity trains dogs to support deaf people and can aid individuals considerably. However, they were told by the Lottery Fund they were not inclusive! At least everyone can look at the statue until such time it gets vandalised!
