AHEAD of a massive clash with second-placed Tring Athletic on Saturday, and after all the hard work in reaching the summit of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One, Colney Heath FC appear to have suddenly developed a fear of heights.
Colney Heath may still be looking down on the rest, but a home win against Stony Stratford on Saturday would have guaranteed their position at the top for at least another week. Somehow, though, Heath lost.
To be fair, the absence of Scott Lacey and Michael Burr were big blows, but this was still most certainly a chance missed.
You could somehow sense it was not going to be their day as early as the first minute when Danny Pickett somehow missed from in front of goal when it looked easier to score. They were made to pay on 12 minutes when Tony Hill fired the visitors into the lead.
Keith Cooper than had to pull off a last ditch tackle to prevent the hosts from going 2-0 down although Dean Parratt, at the other end, twice forced the goalkeeper into making smart saves.
Chris Ingham also had an effort cleared off the line but Robert Blackburne pulled off a superb save, tipping the ball onto the bar, to keep Heath to within a goal going into the break.
The visitors kept Colney Heath at bay throughout the second-half and broke effectively to keep Blackburne busy.
Toby Morrissey had a header saved from a Danny Bright free kick and, as Heath piled forward, Reid Watson caught them with the sucker punch on 85 minutes.
Paul Page came racing forward to net a consolation in the last minute, but by then, the damage was done.
