The UK champion for football freestyling showed youngsters the tricks of the trade at an event last Monday.

Billy Wingrove was greeted by more than 50 Borehamwood youngsters as he demonstrated his skills and tricks.

Mr Wingrove visited children at Brookside Boys' Club, in Buckton Road, and the Hertswood Centre, in Potters Lane, and as well as showing off his winning talents, he provided coaching to the young people.

The 26-year-old said: “I thoroughly enjoy reaching so many young people to share my positive experiences in sport. Sport is not just about winning, it can improve health, social skills and even educational results.

“The young people have been fantastic and we have had a lot of fun. I hope they continue with their sports activities and some might even become our future Olympic champions.”

Mr Wingrove’s visit is part of the Sporting Champions initiative, developed and funded by Sport England, which aims to reach around 100,000 young people nationwide each year.

Councillor Brenda Batten, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and health, said: “It was great to see so many boys and young men at this event. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to meet a sporting champion and they looked as if they really enjoyed trying to emulate his skills.

“Billy was a charming and talented young man and it was interesting to witness his skills which were very impressive.”
