Calls to re-open Radlett Fire Station have been echoed by Hertsmere’s MP this week.

Speaking at a Westminster debate on fire services, James Clappison raised the “widespread concern” sice the closure of Radlett Fire Station in October 2006.

The debate was called a fortnight after firefighters, including those from Borehamwood Fire Station, lobbied Parliament for more action to stop the growing number of firefighters dying while on duty.

In a speech to MPs, Mr Clappison said: “What can only be described as a very vigorous campaign was mounted by Radlett residents and others to keep the fire station open, and a 7,000-name petition was delivered to Hertfordshire county council in connection with the closure.

“The council considers petitions of 250 people to be significant, so to say that concern in Radlett is very widespread would be an understatement. Residents are taking a great interest in the time taken for second appliances to reach fires. Although an appliance might now come from Borehamwood, others have had to come from much further afield to attend fires in Radlett and Borehamwood.”

Hertfordshire County Council has suggested the land housing the former station, in Watling Street, could be sold and used for housing, angering campaigners who are still fighting to see the station re-opened.

Following the debate, Mr Clappison said: “I opposed the closure of Radlett Fire Station and I think Save Our Fire and Rescue (SOFAR) are making a strong case to get the facility reopened. With the increase in housing and transport, we need a fire station in Radlett and we needed the council to keep it open.

“I hope the county council will listen to people because the case to re-open the station is as strong as ever.”
