A charity that has secured contracts to open ten children’s centres in and around Hertsmere is asking parents to get involved in choosing the best locations for the new facilities.

Earlier this year, Hertsmere Leisure was given the go-ahead to build centres in Shenley and Radlett.

Following a final decision by Hertfordshire County Council this week, the charity is now set to manage ten centres county-wide, making it the largest provider of children's centres in Hertfordshire.

The Government has said by 2010 every community should be served by a Sure Start Children’s Centre, where children under five and their families can receive a full range of services to help children reach their full potential.

Answering questions about the proposed buildings, Hertsmere Leisure’s website states: “Firstly we need to find the right premises and we are working with the county council’s building department. In most cases it will probably be a small extension or modification of any existing building.

“We are in the process of planning a consultation with local parents, carers, children and everybody running services for children aged nought to five. You will have an opportunity to complete a questionnaire, attend a focus group and children will have the chance to get involved in a range of activities so that we can find out what they enjoy doing.

“Our role is to make sure the services we offer do not duplicate current ones. Once we find out the needs of your area we will plan our services to fill the gaps.”

A conference will be held on Wednesday May 13, next year, which will set out the findings of the consultation. Dr Tanya Byron, consultant psychologist and television presenter, will be speaking at the event.

Last month, the organisation opened the Borehamwood and Elstree Children’s Centre, in Shakespeare Drive, which has services including parenting workshops, breastfeeding classes and counselling.
