Borehamwood mother and son take on hair-raising challenge

A Borehamwood woman and her son are allowing an Eighties pop star free rein over their hair on Thursday in aid of Children in Need.

Lisa Hunter, 38, of Alban Crescent, Borehamwood, and her son Alfie, 16, will have their hair cut by pop singer Steve Strange as part of the BBC 3 television show, Celebrity Scissorhands, in which celebrities cut people’s hair to raise money for charity.

Mr Strange is best remembered as the lead singer and frontman of the Eighties New Romantic pop group Visage.

Ms Hunter, who is training to be a social worker, said: “On a scale of one to ten, ten being the most scared, I think I’m about 11. I’m letting a madcap Eighties pop star who is apparently very ‘creative,’ attack mine and my son’s hair in the name of charity. Alfie seems to think I’ve stitched him up big time.

”I’m an Eighties lunatic, but my Eighties hairdos are still not something I really want to recapture.”

Alfie, who works in Halfords in Borehamwood, said: “Mum told me the gist of what was happening, after she’d applied for us to be on the programme. I was excited until I saw the show the other day. One guy had massive clumps cut out the side of his head.

“My boss at Halfords said he’d donate money, but he’ll give more if they mess it up.”

The programme will be shown on Friday at 9.30pm. To sponsor Ms Hunter and Alfie, visit justgiving.com/lisaalfiecelebrityscissorhands

You must be as stupid as you are hungry for fame.

Oh thanks Mr B, nothing to do with charity and getting my childen to help others then, how rude presumptious of you!!

If you wanted to help Children in Need, why not just donate to the appeal like everyone else??!!

But then you wouldn't get your mug on the telly for 20 mins would you?

Plus there's the question, why would you want an ex junkie cutting your hair??? That's just plain dumb.

Mr B just for the record i have done lots of TV for your information, from the age of 16, there really is no reason to be so rude...Just for the record as part of UCAS and entering into university you have to show fundraising, and as a student myself (self funding!) as is my son we couldn't afford to make a donation that would count.

Sandra thank you hun for your support so far we have raised over £180 which as individuals we couldn't possibly have afforded to do. Steve Strange did my sons hair and Scott from the boy band five did my hair, we had a really lovely day.

Is Mr B jack in disguise i wonder?

Firstly, I'd just like to defend my comment.

I don't see how you think I am miserable, it is just an opinion. Fair enough, you want to donate to charity, that is to be commended, but come on, letting some freak hack at your hair whilst on TV, that is just stoopid. Charity or not.. What next? You going to let Stevie Wonder paint your house for charity??

Im not knocking you for helping kids out, thats a good thing. My only problem was the fact that you have to go on telly to do it.

Charity is supposed to be selfless, not self indulgent after all...

And no, for the record, I'm not Jack, I haven't mentioned single mums or council flats once yet!!

I am an avid supporter of Help A London Child and breast cancer charities, and you did knock us for what we have done Mr B by refering to us as 'stupid' and 'hungry for fame'

Self indulgent - for furthering an education? because lets be honest here, you don't get any help in this world without helping yourself, and by doing children in need this is giving something back, and teaching my children to appreciate what they do have and to not focus on what they don't have, for which i have done an excellent job in with two very rounded intelligent sons.

By going onto TV to do it heightens the profile of raising money which has certainly worked in the benefit of children in need £187.00 from people in just 5 days so far. Once it is aired this evening we hope there to be more sponsorship because people like to see what they have donated towards. This i the most money we have raised for charity. The others were not televised and are equally worthwhile causes.

Furthering an education? Teaching your kids to appreciate what they have? (A bad hair cut?)

Well for one, Im glad my Mum didnt embarass me on National TV to make a point, and please do enlighten me as to how this is 'furthering an education' (whatever that means..)

As I said, and I stand by it, you could of just donated anonymously like most people do when they give to charity... This is nothing other than wanting to get yourself noticed. But that's upto you.

Mr B try re reading the past comments, i think i have been quite articulate in getting my point across.

So, am i right in thinking you're the sort who chucks loose change into a bucket or can rattler outside Tesco, 'I've done my bit' well good for you!! I'm the sort of person who likes to take part - bungee jumps, charity walks and hair cuts, well good for me!!

Both myself and Alfie in conjunction with Hertsmere Borough Council are organising an event next July at the skate park, or perhaps i should keep this to myself and clear it with you first, and not use the media tools available to me of newspapers, TV, radio and schools to get this event noticed, but then it is up to me to get this into the public domain and getting support...well i've certainly grabbed your attention haven't i? it's a shame that you have such a problem with it and me. How much again did you give to Children in Need? Oh thats right you like to be anonymous.

Your lucky you had a mum when growing up, some children don't!

I rest my case.

Unta, I have no problem with you, thats just silly, as I don't even know you. My only point was that it was stupid to let someone cut your hair, let alone on TV.

Fair enough, you obviously devout a lot of time to this sort of thing, and that's commendable... But I still stand by what I said about having to go on telly and also tell everyone how much you raised..

Oh, and as for having a Mum, mine walked out on me and my brother when I was 11. And I grew up in care. So there you go.

And another thing, I didn't say donating to Children's charities was 'stupid' and 'hungry for fame'. That was my description of the way you are going about it. Two totally different things.

Tunnel vision, you really haven't grasped anything i have said or what you have written...CHILDREN IN NEED is about TAKING PART...the local paper is a tool of communication, take a look at the website http://www.bbc.co.uk
/pudsey/, you have contridicted yourself all the way through, and YES you do have a problem, why else write your comments?

No mother? well my children have no Father...and no doubt you'll have a comment to make on that, with a stereotypical view!! Is not the case you wish you mother was more pro active, as i am with my children? I feel sorry that you missed out on that, not by getting your haircut before you retort back. No one dragged Alfie into the studio scratching and screaming, and i take offence at him being called STUPID, your first comment. Teenagers get enough bad press, and you're adding to it!

A charity that helps children, children who are perhaps are in care, raising the profile i think it's called. Blimey all those 'fame hungry people' that are going to appear on TV Nov 14th, pointless having a show if no one TAKES PART!

London Marathon, how many people from B/wood, Elstree, Radlett have promoted this through the paper, are they wrong too?

I reserve the right to not be called STUPID and HUNGRY FOR FAME...i reserve the right to get the local papers support, by voicing it to the community, but i have already written this.

By getting support and backing from family, friends and the local community benefits CHILDREN IN NEED raising more in this climate by way of donation. Our usual donation would not be any where near the amount collected so far, GOOD THING FOR CHILDREN IN NEED, more money to help others. Children helping children.

Your right you don't know me, i surround myself with positive influences, and not personal attacts on my personality or my family. This world is hard enough!!
