Protest over ‘parking chaos’ near new flats

Angry residents are complaining about a lack of parking after new flats were built in Borehamwood.

Mick Murphy, of Balmoral Drive, and many of his neighbours, have highlighted the problem after housing association William Sutton Homes finished building the flats in Tempsford Avenue.

Mr Murphy said: “When we brought up the issue of parking at a meeting [with the housing association] last year we felt we were rail-roaded.

“Residents are angry as there are going to be a lot more people living here with the new development, so there will be pandemonium.

“We have not been notified as to what will be happening. We need to be able to park near our houses. Apart from being inconvenient, parking further away is a security issue.”

Councillor Pat Strack, Kenilworth ward member, has been supporting residents and helped organise last year’s meeting between them and the housing association at Hertsmere Borough Council. She said: “The issue was raised that we wanted provision for parking after complaints from residents in Balmoral Drive.

“At the meeting there were a number of officers that took away details about the problems raised. This should be considered again by them now the building has been completed.”

Conrad Smith, regional manager for William Sutton Homes, said he was aware there was a lack of off-road parking.

He added: “We have developed a parking strategy to try and ease problems for residents. A total of 28 parking spaces have been provided for the 20 new-build properties.

“We will be contacting the residents of the new properties to confirm whether they need a parking bay and will then request applications of interest from the residents at Tempsford and Balmoral for parking bays within the new development “We can confirm the scheme was approved by the local planning authority following careful consultation with the highways department.”

28 spaces for 20 flats - bearing in mind these are HA flats and really none of the residents should even be able to afford cars - if they can afford cars, petrol, insurance, tax - why can't they pay a full market rent?

I think if the council look into these peoples finances, they will probably be able to ease the problem by removing and crushing the vehicles.

No one in HA accomodation should be able to afford a luxury car. There is public transport, use it.

Go back 40 years - a car was a luxury. Now everyone thinks they are entitiled. welcome to labours something for nothing, blameless culture.

Its not your fault - its society's.

Laughable

jack1 I find your comments completely mad. Why cant people in HA flats afford cars. No-one has said that these people are unemployed. They are mostly one bedroom flats with professional people that have waited on the housing list. Why do you think that people in HA housing want something for nothing if they are working and paying their rent why cant they have a few perks. Not everyone that lives in social housing is claiming benefits.

Because, these people can't afford to live in a non-HA flat. If they lived in private rented accomodation, then they can buy as many cars as they like. However, as HA rent is lower than private rent they should not be able to pay lower rent, to enable them to have enough money to buy a car (or other luxury items). If they can afford cars (with all the associated costs) they can afford to live in private rented accomodation.

To be honest the rent of a 1 bed private rented property and the HA properties are not that different. There may also be other reasons why someone may need a car. I have a car its not a luxury its an essential item. What makes you so sure that these people cant afford private rented housing. Everyone is entitled to accomadation, if they are not a priority then they wait on a list. I am wondering if you drive, if you do why should you have a luxury and nobody else that may work hard for these little extras. Why should you be so judgemental what gives you the right to dictate how others should live there life. Even if some of these are not working at the moment, what has it got to do with you? have you never been down on your luck. If you haven't then lucky you.

Don't worry about off road parking! Just park the Elstree way and park on the pavement.Sure pedestrians have to walk in the road, but hey, the authorities don't seem to care!

as i said, if they can afford cars, which is never an essential item unless you live in a village miles from anywhere - and that does not include Borehamwood - you can use public transport.

If someone lives in private rented accomodation, they can do what they like, but if they are in HA homes, then they should pay more rent before having cars.

I work, and I pay for everything I have. If I can't afford it, I don't have it. pretty simple really.

But, if the council want to pay a contribution to my mortgage, i will certainly get myself a better car and maybe a few more beers etc. Seems like a good deal to me.

Oh jack1 you dont seem to understand what housing associations are for. They are basically private landlords with alot of properties. Did you also know that people in private rented accomadation can have their rent paid by housing benefit aswell. Also dont you dare say that a car is never an essential item. Alot of people including myself need cars, have you ever tried getting on public transport with a wheelchair, shopping and small children or should we go back to the so called wonder years that you speak so highly of where people with extra needs would be hidden away in mad houses. Some of us dont live in this fairy tale world you come from. HA properties are not just for people on benefits there are alot of people that work and work very hard for the things they have and they live in HA properties. Just because you have your own property doesnt mean that you are living the right way in life. what would you do if you lose everything? would you live on the street or would you approach a HA.

I wouldnt worry about him, although you are right Simo. By the sound of it Jack is a bitter lonely old man, so if the loneliness doesnt kill him off soon, the old age will!

It will get worse when William Sutton build yet more flats behind the flats that overlook the playing field on Tempsford avenue, people will live there even if there are no parking spaces at all and Sutton know this, they would rather squeeze an extra 2 bed house in than a parking space as cars do not pay rent.
And they will.

Borehamwood is becoming so over crowded no wonder there's nowhere to park.

Stop building houses in places that are too small to cope e.g Tempsford avenue.

I have lived here all my life and i think now it's getting beyond the joke.

It's supposed to be a village not a spawling metropolis.
