Borehamwood landlady celebrates success

A pub landlady from Borehamwood has beaten more than 2,500 publicans from across Britain to receive a national award for training staff.

Vickie Ray, who runs the Shooting Star, in Rossington Avenue, was rewarded for making a positive impact. She said the pub's growing success is down to the attitude, knowledge and efficiency of its bar staff."We don't just want friendly staff who chat to customers and pull decent pints," she said. "We need workers who are competent enough to take charge when needed."We are thrilled that our commitment to training has paid off and we are now getting recognition. My partner, Jay, and I invest a lot of time in our staff. We believe in teaching our workers about every aspect of the pub and helping them to progress to management level."After only one year in charge of the pub, Ms Ray's unique management has been recognised by Admiral Taverns, Britain's largest independent pub operator.Peter Smith, Admiral's business development manager, said: "Vickie deserved to win because she's an ambitious landlady who came into the industry with relatively little pub experience but has made it work for her."
