Calls have been made for more compensation for commuters who were hit by weeks and weeks of rail chaos.

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden has written to Govia Thameslink and demanded that additional compensation is given to non-season ticket holders.

Commuters from Elstree & Borehamwood, Radlett, St Albans, Harpenden, Mill Hill, Hendon, Cricklewood, and Potters Bar faced severe delays and numerous cancellations after a new timetable was introduced in May.

Last month, Govia revealed details of the months’ worth of compensation season ticket holders could apply for.

But Mr Dowden believes this is not enough.

He said: “The thousands of passengers who either buy tickets every day, make use of Carnet tickets or use contactless cards have had to put up with the exact same level of disruption over the past two months as those who have purchased season tickets.

“It is not fair that they are forced to claim for only a very small amount of compensation for delayed or cancelled trains where season ticket holders will receive the additional compensation on top of this.

“I have written to Govia Thameslink to call for a fair compensation offer where non-season ticket holders would receive a similar level of compensation to that given to season ticket holders.”

Govia Thameslink is the parent company for the Thameslink and Great Northern services.
