Proposals to build 50 homes in Borehamwood have been blocked.

Plans to knock down 39 units and replace them with houses and flats were rejected by the planning committee at Hertsmere Borough Council last Thursday.

A developer wanted to knock down the empty buildings in Windsor Close, off Warenford Way, to create three three-storey apartment blocks and two two-and-a-half storey terraces.

If the application had been successful, 15 one-bedroom flats would have built alongside 24 two-bedroom flats, two two-bed houses and nine three-bed homes.

Seventy-two parking spaces would have been provided. The homes would have been a mixture of private and affordable rent homes.

Ten objections were made on the official application while the planning officer also recommended refusal.

A resident in Brook Road whose garden would have backed onto one of the terraces raised a number of concerns at the committee meeting.

She said that the development would have been an “invasion of privacy, there would not have been sufficient parking, concerns about the levels of traffic and the future of Brook Road” which she says would “need to be widened” to accommodate the extra traffic which could see some of Aberford Park lost.

The lady also said the design of the buildings were “out of keeping” with the area.

Councillors unanimously rejected the plans and pointed to the fact a number of consultees including the Highways department at Hertfordshire County Council raised objections to the proposals.

Redevelopment of the site is welcomed by the borough council but the development has deemed to be too tall and out of keeping with design in the area.
