A teacher is celebrating after writing his name into the cycling history books.

Michael Broadwith, who teaches maths at Haberdashers’ Aske’ Boys’ School, beat the End to End (Land’s End to John O’Groats) Road Records Association(RRA) cycling record.

Mr Broadwith, a triple national champion in distance cycling, completed the ride in a time of 43 hours, 25 minutes and 13 seconds. Along the way, he battled treachers weather conditions and suffered hand and neck injuries.

The feat is made even more extraordinary by the fact that the previous record, which has stood for 16 years, had long been considered ‘unbeatable’.

The school held a celebration event on Friday, June 22 in honour of Michael’s achievement. He cycled through the campus to a guard of honour from students and staff before giving a brief speech and fielding questions from enthusiastic students.

Michael was then presented with a special award to commemorate his success.

He said: “I am delighted to claim the End to End record, more so for my supporters. I am absolutely bowled over by the overwhelming support- people tracked my progress and stayed up in the early hours of Sunday morning until I finished.

“I would like to extend a huge thanks to my wife for her continued encouragement. She managed the support group and updated my progress on Twitter, all whilst looking after our baby daughter.

“I must also thank Habs for supporting me and being incredible. I feel humbled that the school held a celebration event and formed a guard of honour for me.”
