Children who look after their parents tucked into some free pizza thanks to a special event.

To honour, Carers Week, which is marked across the UK, Jackie Grace from Fairbrook Medical Centre in Borehamwood wanted to surprise some young carers with a tasty treat.

Ms Grace, a Carers Champion herself, called MOD pizza in Shenley Road and asked if they wouldn’t mind offering some pizza at a discounted price for an evening of fun.

But she was overwhelmed when MOD told her they could have pizza for free.

Ms Grace said: “This was arranged for the children because it can be really hard for them sometimes looking after family members who may be ill or have health issues. MOD pizza paid for all the children’s pizza which was amazing.

“Their social lives, such as going to after school clubs, can be affected if they are needed to help look after their mum or dad so an evening like this provides them with an opportunity to really relax.”

Annie, 13, and Isabelle, 11, both look after their mums.

They said: “This does feel like a reward. We had pizza and salad and it was so nice. We do have to a lot of things at home but we don’t find it hard.”

Assistant manager at MOD Pizza, Nick Bohanna, said MOD were delighted to be able to support the community.

He said: “Our motto is ‘we make pizza so we can serve people’ and we wanted to serve the community. Some of the children go through so much on a weekly basis. To take some stress away for them is worth it for them.

“At MOD we love to do things like this. We call it ‘spreading MODness’.

Carers Week is a week of events that has taken place across the country this week helping to raise awareness of the work of carers.
