To mark a century of the women’s vote, a group of girl guides staged a celebratory event.

Following the Representation of the People Act 1918, all men and some women were giving the right to vote and throughout this Girlguiding are celebrating the impact of the suffrage movement.

Borehamwood Times:

On June 9, the Girlguiding Radlett District honoured the anniversary with a number of special activities. The girls listened to incredible courageous stories about inspirational and influential women of the past and present while some members chained themselves to railings in recognition of the women who campaigned 100 years ago.

The guides also tried their hand at playing the Parliament EqualiTeas board game which explores women’s rights.

Councillor Caroline Clapper joined in the celebrations.

She said: “This was an absolutely fantastic event. I felt very proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, and to see the tremendous support the girls received from the local community.

“It is so crucial for these young ladies to know about the women who fought so valiantly for the vote 100 years ago, and to understand the difference they made, for future generations, on behalf of all women.”

Borehamwood Times:

Next year, GirlGuiding will be celebrating its own 100 year anniversary in the village. The group have also asked members of the community to make a craft poppy to add to the display in Tykeswater later this year to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War. The aim is to have a display of more than 1,000 poppies.
