A pupil has reached the final of a national science competition after impressing judges with his project looking into artificial intelligence.

Year 12 student, Ali Al-Ali, who goes to The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in Aldenham, is hoping to be crowned champion of the Young Scientist of the Year award at the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair.

It is the biggest celebration of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

Ali has been working on a project, 'Can you trust AI with your life'.

AI is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals.

He has tested the boundaries of a person's trust in AI to find out at what point, if ever, they could fail the human race.

Beth Elgood, director of communications at EngineeringUK said: “Ali really impressed the judges with his project and we’re excited to see how he does at the finals at the fair. Going into its tenth year in 2018, The Big Bang Fair continues to be a great source of STEM inspiration for young people.

The finals will take place at Birmingham's NEC Arena in March where he will be vying for the coveted title of UK young engineer and GSK UK young scientist of the year.
