Hertsmere Labour councillors have outlined plans to “increase transparency” with people.

They have tabled a series of proposals aimed at enhancing and improving the way in which Hertsmere Borough Council engages with local people.

Under Labour’s plans, members of the public would be able to directly question council executive members at meetings while the motion also calls for meetings to be livestreamed on the main social media channels in addition to the council’s own website.

A ‘public question time’ would also be held, chaired by the leader and deputy leader of the council.

Hertsmere Labour group leader Cllr Jeremy Newmark said: “The low turnout in recent local elections is, in part, due to people feeling distant and detached from their local authority.

“We have tabled these proposals to address what is becoming an acute need to address this problem.”

The proposals will be debated at a full council meeting on November 22.
