The borough may split across four constituencies rather than three after the Boundary Commission released their new proposals.

Chipping Barnet and Hendon will still only cover Barnet wards, while a new Finchley and Enfield Southgate constituency will see some of the current Finchley and Golders Green constituency split and combined with the current Enfield Southgate constituency, which will also be split across various local authorities.

A new Hampstead constituency will also encompass Childs Hill and Garden Suburb wards, while Golders Green ward will move into the Hendon constituency, Finchley Church End and West Finchley will move into the Chipping Barnet constituency and Brunswick Park will be split across two constituencies.

Matthew Offord, MP for Hendon, welcomed the changes to Hendon: "Should the proposals go ahead, I would warmly welcome the addition of Golders Green ward to the Hendon constituency.

"The proposals overall aim to decrease the number of MPs and, as a consequence, reduce the cost of Parliament to the taxpayer, which I believe to be the right course of action."

However Enfield Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous felt the proposals would see the tight-knit community of his constituency "carved up" and would not be popular in the area.

He said: "At a time when our country needs greater representation during chaotic Brexit negotiations, the Tories are pushing to slash the number of elected representatives.

"Enfield Southgate deserves better than a divisive top-down reorganisation of our communities."

Further details and opinions will be published in another article in the Barnet Borough Times next week.
