A little boy who is battling cancer has become of the faces of the charity he "owes his life to".

Hugo Griffiths, of Stonards Hill, Epping, is featured on a London Underground network for blood cancer charity Bloodwise.

The four-year-old was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in July 2015 when he was two after becoming pale, tired and having difficulty walking.

As his glands swelled up and he lost his appetite, he was originally diagnosed with Irritable Hip Syndrome and later a virus - before a blood test revealed the devastating news.

But now he is in his third and final year of treatment, although the gruelling regime of chemotherapy means he needs a wheelchair to get around.

Hugo’s mum, Lisa, said: “Hugo had six months of intensive treatment and is now undergoing maintenance treatment. The length of treatment and the constant uncertainty has been very hard to deal with.

"The diagnosis has had an impact on the whole family, not just Hugo."

His big brother, Henry, struggles with the amount of attention Hugo gets as it can be difficult for him to understand.

“We take things one day at a time and although the maintenance phase has allowed us to look to the future a little, booking things or looking too far ahead always feels a bit nerve wracking," Lisa added.

"My little boy owes his life to past research projects funded by Bloodwise. Hugo has a very serious, life-changing illness, but he’s still with us.

"Every day he makes me so proud of how he doesn’t let the harsh effects of his treatment stop him smiling or having fun.”

Hugo’s appeal for Bloodwise is currently featuring on 2,750 advertising panels on tube trains across the London Underground network.
