Hurricane Ophelia is rapidly making its way across the Atlantic towards Ireland.

Travelling up from the Azores, the storm is expected to hit at around midday, with the Met Office warning of a “potential danger to life” caused by gusts reaching 80mph.

Despite Ophelia weakening as it crosses the ocean, amber weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland for the “most intense” period of winds between 3pm and 10pm, while yellow warnings covering western and northern Britain have also been issued.

But in south west Hertfordshire, the conditions are worlds apart.

Today is predicted to bright and sunny, with temperatures far exceeding the average for this time of year.

Although the odd light shower cannot be ruled out, the Met Office is predicting maximum temperatures of 23 °C for the East of England region.

Some blustery winds are expected overnight but will ease before daybreak on Tuesday, which will feel cooler but certainly not cold at 17 °C.
