YOUNG gardeners were beaming with pride after they helped transform a neglected open space into a "breathtaking area".

Pupils from St Edmund's Catholic Primary were joined by the Mayor of Enfield Christine Hamilton in planting flowers at Monmouth Road Green.

It has now become a calm and peaceful landscape to attract bees and butterflies

The area, designed in partnership with Enfield Council and Glendale Countryside Limited, has now won one National Landscape Awards in the Community and Schools Development category.

Part of the spot’s attraction is a paved footpath engraved with a quote from eighteenth century novelist and journalist Daniel Defoe, who wrote about Edmonton.

There is also a retaining wall and a line of trees trimmed into an arc to reflect the Grade II listed crescent of 19th Century townhouses nearby.

Councillor Alan Sitkin, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration and business, said: “We are honoured to be recognised in this way and we are extremely thankful to all who made the project come to life.

“It is a truly breath-taking urban project and I hope all local residents will enjoy the area for years to come.

“The work at Monmouth Road Green forms part of the Council’s growth and sustainability objective, to attract investment and support sustainable regeneration and growth, as well as to provide residents with access to green, open spaces.”

Enfield Council’s in-house team designed the scheme working in partnership with Glendale who submitted the award application.

Positive feedback has led to the Council submitting the green space to the Urban Design Group Awards.
