The founder of a charity run will be swapping trainers for slippers as he plans to retire from the top job.

John Hambleton, 70, Coombe Road, will be stepping in from the post of race director of the Moor Park 10k after one final race this year.

The race will be taking place along with the Junior Fun Run at Merchant Taylors’ School on Sunday October 1 in aid of the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC) and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

The event started in 2002 and attracted 253 adult runners and 114 children to take part, but this has grown so that nearly 700 adults and more than 1,000 children took part last year to raise just under £600,000 for the cause.

The former police officer has worked closely with staff from the centre, and to celebrate his send-off he and his seven grandchildren will be taking part in the race.

He said: “My wife, Helen, and I have had many years of enjoyment and huge satisfaction in organising the event but it is now time to bow out.

“We are delighted that the race has become so successful and we are sure that it will go from strength to strength in the future.

“I haven’t run for many years, but it has been a great thrill to organise the events and bring fun and good health to thousands of people every year.

“The plan is to relax more, but with seven grandchildren and regular childcare it will be a little time before our feet up.

“Although I won’t be directing the race, I would be very surprised if next year I am not here to support my grandchildren taking part.”

The event is coordinated with efforts from Merchant Taylor’s School, Moor Park Golf Course, more than 60 volunteer marshals and officials from the community and residents in the area.

There is still space in all categories except the under 10 girl’s race. To enter the competition visit www.moorpark10k.org.uk.
