Police stations in Hertfordshire are to be refurbished, relocated or redeveloped in a new strategy released by the constabulary.

Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd has announced the new estates strategy to support local policing and make services more joined-up and accessible for people.

This will come through a number of means, including finding and developing new sites for police stations, such as in Watford, refurbishing stations to bring them up to date, such as in Hemel Hempstead, or relocated into "co-located" sites if the opportunity arises.

Currently St Albans and Borehamwood police stations are examples of "co-located" sites as their share their building with Civic Offices, which is an avenue other station may go down in the new strategy.

PCC Lloyd said: "I am determined to further improve the police estate to provide efficient and accessible policing for the county, as well as gaining the best long term income generation from surplus buildings to support the cost of delivering high quality local policing."

He added that in recent years, Hertfordshire Constabulary have opened new stations in Hatfield and Hertford, refurbished Stevenage and Cheshunt and co-located policing and local authority teams in Rickmansworth along with Borehamwood and St Albans.

According to the strategy, policing bases in Berkhamsted, Abbots Langley and South Oxhey will remain, though if an opportunity arises to partner with local bases or find new co-located stations, these will be explored.

The former Borehamwood station is being considered for redevelopment into housing in partnership with local government or private developers, while the St Albans station is set to turn into housing in partnership with St Albans City and District Council, with some income to go towards policing in the area.

A final item in the strategy is the potential change of hands for the Fire and Rescue Services, which currently are governed by the county authority, with Hertfordshire Constabulary exploring collaboration with their stations.
