A commemoration of soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War is being planned as part of a national event.

The Woodcock Hill Village Green Committee lighting their Beacon to honour the sacrifice made by soldiers between 1914 – 1918.

The beacon will be one of 1,000 beacons that will be lit across the country on November 11, 2018 to commemorate the end of the war as part of the Battles Over Tribute.

The committee are appealing to people who lost a family member in World War One to take part in the event.

The ceremony would need to receive funding from the budget of the Borehamwood and Elstree Town Council, and will be discussed by the entertainment committee on Tuesday, September 12.

The Royal British Legion has agreed that they would be stakeholders in the commemoration ceremony.

The site at Woodcock Hill was initially used for a beacon in 1588 to warn the country of the Spanish Armada.

Since then a temporary beacon was lit in 1935 for the coronation of George V, and to mark the centenary of the Spanish Armada in 1988.

In 2012 the committee raised £5,000 for a permanent beacon to be built on the site and to be lit to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

As part of the event the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council and the Royal British Legion worked with the committee to arrange a parade of all uniformed groups and music from the Borehamwood Brass Band.
