Election fever has hit sooner than anticipated as a councillor’s resignation has caused a snap by-election.

Thomas Ash stepped down as borough councillor for Borehamwood Kenilworth ward on Wednesday, August 30 due to work commitments.

In his resignation letter he said: “I would very much like to use this opportunity to convey my heartfelt appreciation for the good work carried out by officers and elected members on behalf of the residents of Hertsmere.

“The council has effected a great deal of positive change for the borough in a difficult economic climate and this is a credit to the hard work of those involved.”

Mr Ash was initially elected as a Conservative councillor to Hertsmere Borough Councillor in May 2015 and is said to have stepped down due to work commitments.

Leader of the Council and Leader of the Conservative Group, Councillor Morris Bright, said: “Thomas has worked hard to represent local residents in his ward and has input some innovative ideas during his time as a borough councillor.

"I wish Thomas well for the future and I've passed on our thanks for his efforts during his time as a borough councillor.”

This has triggered a by-election for the vacancy, which needs to be held within 35 working days of the notice being accepted, meaning the latest it could be would be Wednesday, October 18.

The by-election for the position will now be held on Thursday, October 5, as this was the first Thursday the vote was able to be held.

There has been some objections to this date being chosen, as it will clash with the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which prohibits work on the first two days.

Returning Officer for Hertsmere Chief Executive Donald Graham said: “Unlike when setting our council and committee meetings we did not check religious days for any faith groups.

“Under electoral law, 'dies non' days are the only days to be avoided. These are bank holidays, weekends and Christmas Eve.

“I am also now told that the following Thursday, 12 October, is also a Jewish holiday.

“I am very sorry that I am unable to accommodate a change to the date.”

Anyone who may be affected is encouraged to apply for postal vote by 5pm on Wednesday September 20, or proxy vote by 5pm on Wednesday, September 27.

In order to help people to vote the print run for postal votes has been increased to accommodate any extra demand.
