A school in Finchley is celebrating its first ever set of A level results.

The Compton School in Summers Lane, Finchley, opened its sixth form two years ago, and is today celebrating some brilliant results from their students.

One Leonora Rexha, has exceeded expectations by achieving A*AA, and is now applying for adjustment so she can join the ranks on a top business course at university.

She said: "It's like a dream. This was the hardest thing in my life but I had a good relationship with the teachers so I would email them and speak to them a lot, and practically became like their daughter! But obviously it helped me in the end."

Leonora was one of seven students to receive the A* grade, while only two students gained two of these grades in their final marks.

Anya Mallerman-Bristow was one of these, being awarded two A*s and an A. She will now take her place at Birmingham University to read psychology, which has a placement year and integrated masters.

She said: "I'm still processing it - I'm shaking so much!

Her mother, Sharon, said she was "so proud" of her daughter's achievements.

She said: "I know she has been so nervous I think she only had an hour of sleep last night!

"She has worked really hard and the school has been fantastic."

Another high achieving student at the school is Gaius Zhou, who wants all the credit for his grades to go to God, as a Christian.

He said: "I would pray and God would give me peace and calm.

"All things are in hand with God and He gives me the wisdom - that is my belief with my studies."

Gaius came down to collect his grades from a Bible camp in Newcastle, and said he would not be doing any big celebrations but would return to the camp to finish off the summer before heading to UCL to do chemical engineering.

Following in the engineering trend is Tarun Patel, who said he was "really relieved" to have achieved AAB and will now go to Warwick University to study engineering.

He said: "I was nervous at 6.30am this morning because I got an email from a university about clearing, but then I got my results and it turns out I do not need it."

He praised the "supportive" staff at the school and chose his Physics and Chemistry teachers, Mr Simkins and Miss Juddoo, to pose with for a photograph.

Headteacher Ann Marie Mulkerins said she could not believe the progression, as she had taught many of the students from Year Seven, including Tarun, and praised the "tremendous" teaching staff.

She said: "In these times opening a sixth form is hard work financially but we are delighted with our first set of results and hopeful they will improve year on year.

"Our teaching staff are tremendous. I could not wish for a better staff - they are 100 per cent committed and just fully supportive of students."

One of the staff members, Anjali Juddoo, who teaches chemistry, said being a new sixth form is a lot of pressure for students and teachers, but praised her hardworking students for their results.

On how she will celebrate, she said: "I'm just going to lie down! I was up every hour last night but I think we were all just thinking they have done really well.

"It is not our success because the majority of the work was done by them and we just did everything we could."

Leanne Drury, another high achiever with two A*s and a C, was nervous about her results after the fire alarm went off during her PE theory exam.

Luckily, she still achieved what she needed to go to Birmingham University to study Sport and Exercise Science.

She said: "To celebrate I'm going out with friend and maybe family as my sister gets results today from Capel Manor, doing animal management and zoology."

Director of Sixth Form Jonathan McDonnell was "immensely proud" of the students and called it "very special" to see their hard work being rewarded, and was seen greeting excited students, consoling those who were disappointed, and inviting them each to return to the school to update them on how they are doing in the future.
