Children were invited to Albert Square and encouraged to get creative in their efforts to protect the planet.

Pupils from Year 3 of Meryfield Community Primary School, Theobald Street, were invited to spruce up the hoarding wall of the rebuild of Albert Square at BBC Elstree Studios.

Construction company Wates who are working on the site expansion welcomed the kids to design a painting titled “Why we should all love our earth, and what we can do to help”.

The young artists worked on their masterpiece in the morning and were given a tour of the EastEnders set and shown where the programme is filmed once they were done.

The BBC have recently made changes to their Elstree site to make it greener in line with wider goals to reduce the impact of filming on the environment.

The long-running soap has achieved the highest possible rating for sustainable television production for its efforts to reduce its carbon and waste footprint.

EastEnders Company Manager Carolyn Weinstein said "We were delighted to open our doors to Meryfield pupils.

“The BBC is committed to being a positive part of the local community, so it was fantastic to see the EastEnders team working with the boys and girls to make this mural possible.”
