A dog-day fundraising event took place on Sunday to help a stroke rehabilitation project.

The "Dog Day Afternoon" saw the Ye Olde Mitre Inne, Wood Street, Barnet, filled with more than 200 people and their dogs to raise around £2,000 for Stroke Rehab Dogs.

Occupational therapist and founder of the project, Sallie Bollans, demonstrated how dogs assist stroke survivors of all ages with her canine team, and a 43-year-old man spoke about how dogs helped him after a major stroke several years ago.

Event organiser Elaine Cole of Moxon Street, High Barnet, said: "This was our very first fundraiser for Stroke Rehab Dogs, and it proved to be a huge success.

"Not only did it raise much needed funds and awareness of this type of animal assisted therapy, but it was so much fun, and educational too!"

There was also a doggy dancing and obedience display by Elmtree Dog Training and Education Centre, a first aid demonstration for dogs by Wood Street Veterinary Hospital, a dog grooming by the team from the Woof Lounge in St Albans Road, and a canine-themed pub quiz.

Ms Bollans said:"We are so very grateful to all who came along on Sunday and donated so generously.

"A massive thank you on behalf of myself and the team, and our brave stroke survivors."
