A synagogue celebrated the land of the free and the home of the brave in honour of its new rabbi.

The Bushey United Synagogue, in Sparrows Herne came together to celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4 for Rabbi Elchonon Feldman.

The New Yorker and his family joined the synagogue in December 2016 after five years at the Belmont United Synagogue in Stanmore.

The synagogue was decked out in red, white and blue to represent the star-spangled banner.

Nearly 150 people were in attendance that night including Councillor Paul Morris OBE and Councillor Brenda Batten, Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere.

There was plenty of popcorn, coke floats and candy for people to enjoy, with US-themed entertainment provided throughout the evening.

Among those was “Elvis Schmelvis” a top Elvis Presley impersonator was on hand got the crowd All Shook Up and Rabbi Feldman led the dancing to make sure no one stood on any Blue Suede Shoes.

He said: “It was a fantastic evening to celebrate my country's wonderful history, but while Independence Day is a lot of fun, it's also a time to think about the values, rights and liberties we need to uphold, now more than ever."

The US national holiday is held each year to commemorate the anniversary that the 13 colonies in North America became a nation separate from the British Empire in 1776.
