A dementia support group will be holding an official launch to celebrate its commitment to care in the community.

The opening ceremony of the Dementia Club UK branch in Borehamwood will be held in Fairway Hall, Fairway Avenue, between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday, July 11.

The group have run several sessions in the run-up to this event to see what the most effective way to provide care is and what activities are most enjoyable and useful to members.

The charity was created in 2015 by Cllr Lisa Rutter of Brunswick Park, Barnet with financial support from the Saracens Rugby Club and has been run in five different location in the borough before moving into Hertsmere.

The decision to provide this support in Borehamwood was made just over a year ago, and now these plans are becoming a reality and a help to those in need.

Town Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Cllr Eric Silver has chosen the organisation as the charity he is officially supporting in his official duties this year.

Sessions will run between 2pm to 4pm on the second and fourth Tuesday each month where members can partake in gentle exercises, musical activities, quizzes and refreshment.

The support offered is not only with those who have dementia symptoms, but also for their carers and those who have lost loved ones who had suffered with it in their life.

The team running the network is comprised of Rotarians, members of the Visually Impaired Club, a doctor and Councillors.

Membership has increased with each week the plan has been developed in the sessions run by Councillor Pat Strack.

She said: “We have been adjusting the programme to make sure we get the balance of activities and rest just right.

“It is amazing how this care works. One woman who had been angry calmed right down once we all started singing. I would never have believed it if I had not seen it.

“We try and create a nice atmosphere. It’s a difficult thing to live with and it is equally important that we give carers respite.”

It’s amazing what this support can do for people with dementia.
