Con artists are being tackled in a scheme to make people become aware of the latest scams.

Hertsmere Borough Council are hosting Scams Awareness Month throughout July to help residents keep on the lookout for anyone trying to swindle money from them.

Crooks may try to get money over the phone, by post, on email, via text or by someone visiting your home.

The public are being warned never to say or type their PIN over the phone as police or bank staff would not ask these details and can access your bank account using technology.

If callers suggest you call your local police or bank, use another phone or ensure the line has been fully disconnected by phoning a friend or relative first.

Another common scam is being asked to send money in order to access the winnings of a lottery, sweepstake or competition.

Advice on spotting and preventing these scams will be one of the topics discussed at the Older Persons Awareness and Learning (OPAL) event in Bushey on Wednesday, July 12.

Contact the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06 for information on how to reclaim your money.

To report scams or suspected scams contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go to www.actionfraud.police.uk, or for an active crime and immediate danger call the police on 999.

Scams Awareness Month is run by the Consumer Protection Partnership. Formed in April 2012, the CPP brings together key partners to better identify, prioritise and coordinate action against fraud.
