Councillors are calling for a review of election registration after hearing complaints about people being unable to vote on June 8.

Barnet Labour councillors have called for the verification of peoples' registrations on the electoral roll to be reviewed after they received complaints from residents who were unable to vote, despite them submitting applications by the deadline.

The Times Series also reported on people having problems with their registration and fearing they would be "disenfranchised" on June 8.

Cllr Barry Rawlings said: "Having seen the details of some of the complaints I am concerned there has been an IT or other system error in the verification process which may mean many more people were affected.

"Any individual deprived of their right to vote should be unacceptable to the Council, and so these complaints must be properly investigated."

One example of this was Jackie Vegoda of Hughes Close, Finchley, who was told she could not vote until intervention from MP Mike Freer revealed a problem with Ms Vegoda's address in the council's database had caused the mix up.

While it was rectified by the council, Ms Vegoda later received a phone call to follow up her original complaint, as the knowledge of this being fixed had not reached others in the department.

John Hooton, Chief Executive and Acting Returning Officer for Barnet, said: “The election process ran smoothly across Barnet on 8 June with a high number of our residents turning out to vote.

All local authorities have to deal with queries during an election but we did not experience any widespread problems with electoral registrations or verification in Barnet.

Those queries that were raised were investigated thoroughly and resolved where possible."

Mr Hooton continued that if the government can not verify voter applications, residents should provide further information to the council by the statutory deadline, which can not be circumvented by law.

He said: “As is routine in Barnet, we will carry out a review of the General Election process to evaluate and assess how the process was conducted which will happen after every election.

"A preliminary report will be taken to General Functions Committee on June 28, and a full report will go to back to that committee in the autumn.”
