Heroic members of the public saved drivers from a burning car after a crash on the M1 on Wednesday.

The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit tweeted a heartfelt thank you to the "heroic, selfless action" of two members of the public who stopped their cars to pull two people from a Peugeot 307 which had caught fire.

The car and a lorry crashed on the M1 northbound between junction 6A and 7, near Hemel Hempstead, before the car caught on fire.

The ambulance service took one person to Hemel Hemsptead General Hospital for further car and four other people were treated for less serious injuries at the scene.

Herts Police were called at 3.53pm along with the East of England ambulance service and Herts Fire, and arrived to find no one trapped inside the vehicle.

The road was closed by Highways England before lanes were gradually opened throughout the evening, with police leaving the scene at 6pm.
